The University Star

Student Publications Department, Texas State University

Project Management | UX & UI | Collegiate Marketing

For over a century, The University Star has been the staple of student media at Texas State University. This news organization has had dozens of noteworthy alumni including the 36th president of the United States, Lyndon Baines Johnson. It was an honor to develop a contemporary website that would support over a million page views within a year with a responsive interface for any device.

During my time with The University Star, I had participated in countless projects from creating digital advertisements to developing a custom search engine with over 20 years of content indexed. Currently, I manage the advertising department for The University Star and play an important role in the art direction of The Star's house ads as well as overseeing a team of Account Executives.

One of my projects for my Ad Copy & Layout class was to create a print and digital ad for an ensemble performance by the Texas State concert band. This campaign was to be featured on the Texas State University website, social media and in a magazine.

For an account planning project, we had been assigned the Texas State athletics department as a client. Our team focused on solving the business problem at hand, how can the TXST athletics department increase the attendance for the Texas State football games. We focused on a campaign that would specifically target the San Marcos community and build on the relationship the University had with their hometown. I had also be asked to design custom name tags for the faculty members of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication that attended a campus-wide event. The design featured an illustration of one of Old Main's spires, an iconic building that is often utilized in Texas State University's media and home to the School of Journalism and Mass Communication.
